5 Tips to Help with Night Terrors

Night terrors are something that all three of my kids have experienced. Here are my top tips for managing them and some naturopathic and homeopathic remedies that can help. ⁠

  1. First of all, ensure your child is getting enough rest during the day (if appropriate) and or enough sleep. Sometimes night terrors are triggered due to being overtired.

  2. Monitor / reduce screen time if it exceeds more than an hour per day

  3. Supplement with magnesium citrate + zinc picolinate at bed time (directions based on weight)

  4. Homeopathics for emotional support - night terrors can occur when your child is going through significant change or is anxious, needy or clingy. Another option is to practise some emotion coaching (naming the feelings and allowing all of it to be ok) and spending 1:1 time with your child whenever you can and giving them lots of positive reinforcement.

  5. Worm them - see my blog on worming kids - I do this on a regular basis (every school holidays!)

Homeopathic remedies for night terrors can be very helpful, depending on the temperament of your child. These are prescribed on an individual basis. Other homeopathics that are effective include:

- cina

- belladonna for kids who are hot, red faced, wake up sweaty and clammy with the night terrors, kids who need belladonna tend to be more anxious

- stramonium - violent dreams with loads of fears, their night terrors are sudden a violent they fear the night

- ignatia - child wakes cranky and irritable

- cal carb - deeply sensitive, multiple fears and anxieties, dreams of monsters after midnight

- phosphorous - also deeply sensitive kids with fear of dark, thunderstorms, something will creep out of corners, vivid dreams of fire and frequent waking (more than once)
