POST-NATAL DEPLETION

Having a baby can be one of the most amazing and initiating experiences. It brings about a whole new perspective on life, love connection and presence. I am constantly in awe of women’s bodies and the ability we have to adapt and provide for our babies. Not to mention the spiritual and energetic shifts that the mother, father and baby undergo to transform into a new life as a family unit.

However, the impact of this phenomena is NOT discussed enough and there is an expectation that we just ‘get on with it’ doing all the things we used to do after the birth of our first baby (and again after subsequent births). It is no wonder that post-natal anxiety and depression are on the rise. Rest is vital for women after giving birth and I would encourage new mamas to incorporate some soul-nourishing self-care as and when they can.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that women wait at least 18-24 months between babies. However, a significant shift in birth and pregnancy outcomes can be realised if the mother waits 3-5 years in between conception and birth of consecutive pregnancies.

A baby is likened to a parasite (in the nicest possible way!) as it takes all the nutrients it needs from the mother; regardless of how low her nutrient stores are. This includes major nutrients like B12, iron, iodine, zinc, magnesium, folate, B6 and vitamin D. These nutrients are fundamental to produce a healthy milk supply, precursors to healthy mood production, they support the ability to adapt to stress, maintain good energy levels, help induce deep sleep and are protective against thyroid function and healthy hormone production. So you can see; these nutrients are fundamental in supporting the mother to be energised, happy and have a stabilised mood. Any nutrient depletion will, of course, contribute to post-natal depletion.

How do you know if you have post-natal depletion?

·       If you have had a baby in the past 5 years

·       If you haven’t taken appropriate supplementation post the baby for at least 12-24 months

·       If you have had thyroid conditions, hormonal issues, anxiety or depression post-baby

·       If you feel generally tired

·       If you can’t drop into deep levels of sleep

·       Are having issues falling pregnant with consecutive children

·       Hyper-vigilance

·       Frustration or resentment

·       Little or no libido

What can you do about it?

·       See an appropriate health practitioner, a Naturopath or integrative medical practitioner for a full blood count and investigations of all body systems and biochemical pathways and nutrients

·       Have appropriate pre-conception care so you are creating a baby from a full space

·       Wait at least 3 years in between pregnancies or take appropriate supplementation as prescribed by your naturopath or doctor
