WHITE RICE OR BROWN RICE?
Brown rice has been a staple in a wholefoods diet however when I discovered the arsenic content in rice I was shocked.
Rice requires loads of water to cultivate and grow and it’s the water that contains arsenic, which is collected primarily in the husk. Whilst many people believe brown rice to be the healthier option; lower in calories and higher in fibre – it is also higher in arsenic as it has a harder outer casing.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), brown rice contains about 50 percent more arsenic than white rice does because a good deal of that arsenic collects in the bran, or the outer portion of the rice grain. Whilst white rice like Basmati, the bran is removed during production.
According to a study published in 2017 in the journal Science of the Total Environment, rice accumulates 10 times more arsenic than other grains, such as wheat and barley.
