WORM TREATMENTS FOR KIDS

The part of school holidays that I love the most is the pace, as we are able to slow down and there’s less rushing here and there. Whilst the break also brings its challenges, organising fun activities or juggling care on the workdays, it also signifies an occasion that many of you may not expect to hear, but that I feel urged to share. It’s WORMING TIME!

No not the sweet/sour chewy type that you see here… The dreaded threadworm.

I recommend worming your children every 3 -6 months, one of my children is predisposed to worms so for us it’s every 3 months. It’s a good idea for any child that is at daycare, pre-school or school. Another reason to worm our children is if your family has pets.

Worms can inflame the gut lining and invite a whole bunch of other parasites and bacteria into the gut. Worms can lower absorption but also irritate our little people. Worms are more active at night so sleep starts to become disrupted, bottoms become itchier, our little ones wake unrefreshed and they complain of itchy bottoms or vaginas in girls. Itchy, inflamed vaginas can also be a symptom of worms.

The easiest and most effective way to do it is by taking combantrin (from the chemist). Dosage as directed but I recommend doing another dose 7 days later because worms spawn and then release ova and cysts over a 7-day period. There are naturopathic treatments I layer over the top of that to ensure good gut health – like chondroitin powder, probiotics, limited sugar and loads of vegetables and bone broth.
