Leaky Gut in Children
Did you know our gut microbiome control our food choices and cravings? Cool hey? This happens for adults and also our children.
Leaky gut can be a precursor to:
• Constipation + diarhoea
• Mood swings and emotional outbursts
• Lowered immunity, chronic ear, urinary, throat and lung infections
• Skin issues such as eczema, acne and roseacea
• Depression, anxiety ADD & ADHD
What is leaky gut?
I explain to patients that it is like a weedy garden, when the weeds overgrow the garden nothing healthy can grow and cultivate, until we weed the garden and give the soil nutrients the flowers, herbs and vegetables won’t grow.
This is very similar to what happens in the gut. Antibiotic use, repeated illness and poor nutrition will feed the bad bacteria and when this happens parents often report that their child is sick all the time, moody fatigued, complain of a sore tummy and crave sugars and carbohydrates.
Some other symptoms you might notice in your children are
• Dark circles under their eyes
• Poor sleep quality including sleep apnoea
• Excessive mucous production
• Red raised lumps on the tops of their arms
• Coated white tongue
• White spots on their nails
ORANGE GUMMIES RECIPE
HERO INGREDIENT: PEPTIPRO GELATIN POWDER
Gelatin is a super food in my mind, it contains amino acids such as proline and glycine that are healing, sealing and anti-inflammatory for the gut. It is also amazing for providing all the building blocks for protein which is so important for our children’s growth, bone development and healthy tummies!
One of my favourite ingredients for supporting leaky gut is peptipro Gelatin powder to make healthy gummies for school lunch boxes.
RECIPE
3 x ‘my organic school oranges
1 handful of ‘my organic school’ strawberries
4 tablespoon peptipro gelatin powder
100mls of water
blend fruit and water until its smoothe
slightly warm in pot on stove
add gelatin powder and honey (if needed)
pour into silicone moulds and pop in fridge for 30 – 45 minutes until set like lollies
